Take a fun and easy approach to the detailed and realistic illustrations of botanical art. Just like a botanical artist, you will use plant observation, drawing, color mixing and watercolor painting to bring your flower and fruit models to life. Using a pointed steel nib, produce an elegant style of lettering characterized by both thick and thin strokes typical of the Copperplate script. This calligraphic writing harkens back to 16th century English round hand writing masters that used copper plate engravings to print their work. Please bring a pointed pen nib such as Gillott 404, Zebra G, Nikko G or similar nib, an oblique penholder, Higgins Eternal Ink and gum arabic (optional). Paint landscapes in a style that is direct, expressive and spontaneous - a manner that invites a whole array of sensory experience. We'll be exploring using mindfulness, journaling, and preparatory paintings that encourage freedom and new paradigms in perspectives. Learn techniques for drawing and painting people and animals from photographs. We will learn contour drawing from the inside out starting with the human or animal eye; then we will learn how to draw the shapes of the head using the eye for proportion and measurement. After that, we will paint and learn to mix colors on paper instead of the palette. There will be plenty of time for individual attention and critiques of your work.

Beginners and experienced portrait painters are welcome in this class!  Let's look at a brief history of portrait painting and then dive right in with expressive and descriptive portraits of the live model.  This class will be an exploration of different ingredients of portraiture from technique to the personal, unique expressions of individual personalities of both the painter and the subject.  We'll have fun with the vast range of styles and choices that this particular art form presents!
