Classes for High School Students: ACT & SAT Preparation, Small Group Intensive SAT, and Drivers Ed after school or weekends. Classes are in alphabetical order.

The goal of this 2-session writing workshop will be for each student to complete at least one real college application essay (sometimes called a “personal statement”). The first night’s session will focus on what a successful, entertaining application essay should be—the kind that admissions officers are looking for. We will read and discuss sample application essays and brainstorm topics for each student’s own essay. We will create rough drafts, share them with other students, and then break for two weeks while students develop the essays they started in class.   Between the first and second session, students will revise their drafts and e-mail them to the instructor for verbal and/or written comments and suggestions. In the second session, students will revise their drafts with the instructor’s comments in mind, and then share their newest draft with the class to get peer feedback and more instructor input. By the end of the second session, each student should have a successful essay completed.

The goal of this 2-session writing workshop will be for each student to complete at least one real college application essay (also known as a personal statement). The first night’s class will feature a brief overview of the college application process, and then focus in on the application essay/personal statement--what it is and what admissions officers are looking for. We will read and discuss sample application essays and brainstorm topics for each student’s own essay. We will create rough drafts, share them with other students, and then break for two days.   Between the first and second class, students will revise their drafts and e-mail them to the instructor for review. In the second session, students will revise their second drafts with the instructor’s comments in mind, and then share their new draft(s) with the class to get peer feedback and more instructor input. By the end of the second session, each student should have a successful essay nearly completed.
