The SAT Preparation class is designed for high school students who would like to sharpen their language art and math skills before taking the newly designed SAT college entrance exam. Classes will be devoted to in-depth preparation for each section of the SAT: Reading, Writing and Language, Math with a calculator, and Math without a calculator. Practice tests will be administered to help students focus their preparation and to develop pacing for the exam. Outside work will be assigned and is considered crucial for the student to realize maximum benefit from the course. The Reading class will emphasize finding evidence in passages to support the correct answers, examining hypotheses and interpreting data. The Writing and Language class will review Standard English conventions, sentence and paragraph structure, and evaluating content for relevant details. The Math classes will focus on linear equations and systems, data analysis, geometry and trigonometry, with an emphasis on solving problems efficiently and strategically. Students are asked to come to class with a writing instrument. In addition, this course offers an opportunity for students to take a practice SAT in a classroom environment simulated to resemble the real test day. Students will learn how to apply lessons from class to the reality of test-taking. This mock-SAT will not only expose students to hundreds of additional practice problems, but will also provide experience in pacing and maintaining mental stamina. Following the practice test, students' understanding of the test will further be augmented through grading, scoring, and an additional period of question review and final instruction. Mock test (and last class session) 2/18 from 10:00am- 5:00 pm.
