NASA’s BEST is a hands-on engineering program. NASA’s BEST: The Rocket Booster is a full day version that includes experiential team building, the use of film for context, and deliberate team communication skills development. You will discover NASA’s Engineering Design Process (EDP) through 6-8 core “missions” as you work in small teams to design, create, and test prototypes against parameters based on NASA’s efforts to return to the moon, explore Mars, and go beyond. You will learn about past and future moon missions to inspire you as you complete your own daily training that includes mini-challenges and team building both indoors and out. Each day offers facilitated opportunities to discover and reflect on your own strengths while you develop specific social and emotional skills needed to collaborate with others and solve challenges that come with no recipes for building the products. Sample core mission challenges include: building a model satellite to orbit the moon, building a balloon rocket to launch your satellite, preparing for a mission, designing a landing pod, designing and building a reusable crew exploration vehicle, launching your crew exploration vehicle, creating a solar sail, designing a lunar thermos, and building a solar oven that, if successful, can be used to make S’mores. You will document your learning and create a final presentation to share an example of your Engineering Design Process that can be embedded in a website.
