Explore local and extended hiking and other outdoor pursuits.

Two essential problems of marine navigation are knowing where you are and where to go.  A GPS loaded with electronic charts can answer those questions efficiently, but it can lull the skipper in delegating navigational responsibilities to a system which could suddenly fail.  With the safety of crew and vessel at stake, one must be able to navigate with tools other than a GPS.  In this class, focused on daylight, coastal navigation, you will learn about nautical charts, passage plotting, dead reckoning, position fixing, course correction in the presence of current, and collision avoidance. No previous sailing experience required. The class involves a practicum for each session and 2 - 4 hours of homework each week.  A detailed syllabus is available from the instructor.  A $40 materials fee, which covers course plotter, nautical charts and handouts, is payable to instructor at first class.  Class is limited to 8 students.
