Writing the College Application Essay / Platt Middle

« back to classes page
In this 2-session writing workshop, each student completes at least one real college application essay (known as the “Basic Essay” if used for the Common Application, or as the “Supplemental Essay” if used for applications to individual colleges). The first night’s session focuses on what a successful, entertaining application essay should be—the kind that admissions officers are looking for. We will read and discuss sample application essays and brainstorm individual topics. We will create at least two rough drafts, subject them to peer editing and instructor comments, and then break for two weeks while students develop the essays they started in class.

Between the first and second in-class session, students will revise their second draft and e-mail the revised, edited third draft to the instructor for additional verbal and/or written comments and suggestions. During that “middle week”, the student will have a mandatory phone conference with the instructor. In the second class session, students will revise and polish their drafts further, then share the revised fourth draft to get peer feedback and more instructor input. By the end of the second session, each student should have a successful essay completed and ready to submit to colleges.
